Tuesdays, 6-9 pm

January 16 – February 27 (7 weeks)

$275 (+ MPA membership*)

For those who have never printed before or need a re fresher on the basics, this class explores skills and techniques involved in this versatile process, which is capable of creating multi-coloured images on a variety of surfaces. Students will learn new skills and methods to achieve their creative goals.

Lisa has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Manitoba. She is a published illustrator, printmaker, art educator and comic book creator.

 

 

Advanced Screen Printing - Only one spot left!!

Thursdays, 6-9 pm

January 18 – March 1 (7 weeks)

$275 (+ MPA membership*)

In this class, participants will build on basic screenprinting skills.  Each class will have a demonstration of a different technique that participants can incorporate into their own individual projects.

Suzie Smith is an interdisciplinary artist who often uses screenprinting and other printmaking techniques. She enjoys experimenting with print process to push the boundaries on what can be accomplished.

 

 

Introduction to Etching: Aluminium Plates - Only three spots left!!

Saturdays, 1-4 pm

January 20 – March 17 (8 weeks)

$250 (+ MPA membership*)

Etching can result in prints of wonderful subtlety and richness. This course introduces the basic principles of etching using aluminum plates. You will learn how to prepare your plate for etching, how to etch crisp lines, how to produce areas of tone and how to introduce colour to your print. No prior etching experience required.

Nora Kobrinsky is a printmaker and painter. Her first experience of printmaking was a class at Martha Street Studio. Since then she earned her BFA Honours at University of Manitoba (2008) and has taken several more classes at Martha Street before becoming an instructor.

 

 

A Sampler Pack of Printmaking Techniques

w/Ann Rallison

Mondays, 6-9 pm

January 22 – March 12 (7 weeks – no class February 19)

$225 (+ MPA membership*)

A little bit of this and a little bit of that – this is the perfect course for people who want to try printmaking and don’t know where to start!  Drypoint, block printing, collagraph and some monoprint techniques will be explored in this fun, hands-on course.  Great for first time printers or those who want a refresher!

Born and educated in England, Ann obtained her first degree from the University of Liverpool and subsequent degrees from University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba.  Ann has been an active member of Martha Street Studio for many years as an instructor, studio renter and Board member. She has tried many forms of printmaking and continues to enjoy learning, as well as teaching.

 

 

Digital Darkroom

w/Lisa Stinner

Saturdays, 10am-1pm

January 27 – March 24 (8 weeks – no class February 17)

$250 (+ MPA membership*)

This course will explore a variety of different Adobe Photoshop techniques that will allow students to both improve their existing photographs and produce exciting new images. The first two classes will focus on image enhancement techniques that will give students ultimate control in manipulating density, colour balance and sharpness (without the use of automatic corrections). The course will then focus on the creative possibilities using masking, layers, alpha channels and basic compositing. A rudimentary knowledge of Photoshop is an asset to taking the class.

Lisa has a Master of Fine Arts Degree in photography and has exhibited her work locally, nationally and internationally. She is also an accomplished architectural photographer.

 

 

Letterpress

Wednesdays, 6-9 pm

January 31 – March 7 (6 weeks)

$200 (+ MPA membership*)

Students will learn the basic principles & processes of type sorting & setting. They will gain an understanding for the methods of both proofing, and platen presses. Students are encouraged to gather words, poetry, and short stories to help create posters, cards, and other relief prints using this traditional medium of movable type. 

Sean McLachlan is a Winnipeg based artist who recently completed a series of sculptures on Lily Street in downtown Winnipeg. Sean has worked at Martha Street Studio for 7 years and is using his art to explore the boundary between traditional and digital printmaking technologies, and is co-founder of Letter Peddler Press.

This two–day workshop will focus on the basics of screenprinting including an orientation to the specific equipment and spaces used at Martha Street.  Great for the beginner or to refresh your skills.

Alison James is a multidisciplinary artist and art educator based in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  She holds a BFA Honours degree from the University of Manitoba, and has exhibited her work nationally and internationally in galleries and film festivals.

 

Registration:

 

* Course registration requires a valid Martha Street Studio membership: $35 Regular $20 Student / Senior

Course fees include basic materials and equipment.

Class sizes are kept small to ensure a high quality of instruction.

If a course is cancelled due to insufficient registration, a full refund will be issued.

Registration fees will be refunded upon request (less a 20% administration fee) up to the beginning of the second class.
