Karen Cornelius was born in the United States, grew up in Congo, and attended high school in Kenya. She became a Canadian citizen while living in Ottawa, and now lives in Winnipeg, following two and a half years working and living in Eritrea.
She received a BFA from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia. She continued studying printmaking with Leonard Gerbrandt at the Ottawa School of Art, and more recently with Nik Semenoff at the University of Saskatchewan. She has been exploring less toxic more environmentally friendly printmaking methods and materials. She has been working as a printmaker for over 25 years.
She was awarded printmaking residencies at St. Michael’s Printshop in Newfoundland, Guanlan Printmaking Base in China and Manitoba Arts Council Deep Bay Residency. She works out of both Martha Street Studio and her personal printmaking studio in Winnipeg.
She has had her work exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions, and in many juried group shows in Canada, United States, Africa and China. Her work has been purchased by the Canadian Art Bank, and is held in the National Archives of Canada, Provincial Government of Manitoba, Ernst and Young in Toronto as well as corporate and private collections around the world.
