Introductory Screen Printing Course with Bramwell Enan

Covering the basic how-to of screen printing and experimenting with some trickier techniques, this course covers the fundamentals for beginners and returning printmakers alike. Students will have the opportunity to create projects using analog and digital techniques, and will be introduced to special techniques including blended gradients, multi-colour registration, and mono print methods.

Bramwell Enan lives and works in Treaty 1 Territory in Winnipeg, Canada, making art where intuition meanders through play into form. Enan holds a BFA (Hons.) from the University of Manitoba and teaches printmaking at Martha Street Studio.


Intermediate Screen Printing Course with Ali James

For students looking to refine and expand their screen printing skills, this class features demonstrations of advanced techniques and the opportunity to develop work with the oversight of an experienced printer. Familiarity with screen printing at Martha Street Studio is required.

Ali James is a Winnipeg-based artist who uses screen printing and animation to produce vivid, layered and tactile works that explore human memory and emotion. Ali holds a BFA Honours degree from the University of Manitoba.


Introduction to Colour Lithography with Jonathan S. Green

Stone on stone action! This course will introduce multiple layer lithography printing. Students will learn t-bar registration, paper prep, colour ink use and printing along with rainbow rolls. We will go through different approaches for creating a multi-layer image. Students will also be reacquainted with the basics of lithography. Prior lithography experience is required.

Born in Labrador City, Canada, Jonathan S. Green comes from Mi’kmaq, Inuit, and settler heritage (He/Him). Green earned an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Alberta. He has hiked extensively through the Rockies and in Alaska. Most recently he sailed on a tall ship as part of the Arctic Circle residency.


Super Simple Colour Theory Course with Bramwell Enan

Red + Blue = mud, but cyan + magenta = purple. Confused? Learn why in this introductory Colour Theory course! Cover the basics of colour relationships, from primaries to tertiaries, colour properties like value and tone, and practical use of colour in an image, then put together your own palette with all that you’ve learned. This course will be taught using screen printing techniques.

Screen Printing Basics Workshop with Ali James

This workshop will focus on the basics of screen printing and include an orientation to the specific equipment and spaces used at Martha Street Studio. Learn how to create stencils, prepare a screen, mix ink, and create a two or three layer screen print. Great for the beginner or to refresh your skills.

Floral Printing Workshop with Daisy Wu and Madelyn Gowler

This workshop will lead participants through the process of making lumen prints and phytograms. We will be composing flowers onto the surface of silver gelatin photographic paper to create haunting impressions of plant matter. All materials will be included, but participants are welcome to bring their own herbs, flowers, or leaves.

Daisy Wu is a photo-based artist from Nantong, China, currently based in Winnipeg, on Treaty 1 Territory. Her practice delves into film and plant-based film development. Wu’s practice explores themes of family, belonging, and immigration through photography, textile, painting, installation, and video.

Madelyn Gowler is a queer, film-based artist focusing on materiality and experimental processes of image making. They mainly work with textiles, and analog photography and filmmaking. Their practice focuses on meditative processes of deconstruction, repurposing, and film as subject. Gowler has taught many alternative photography workshops through galleries and schools.


Letterpress Cards and Carving with Sean McLachlan

In this workshop, students will learn the basics of creating folding greeting cards on our letterpress equipment using movable type, printers’ cuts, and pairing this with personal lino-cut graphics. Students can anticipate creating two card designs of up to two colours, with multiple prints of each.

Sean McLachlan is a Winnipeg based artist whose work blends traditional letterpress printing with digital technologies such as 3d printing and laser cut woodblocks. He is known under two other names, Printmonger Press for his personal letterpress studio, and Letter Peddler Press, the bicycle-mounted letterpress studio, where you can find him printing postcards with the public.


A Printmaker’s Picnic: Lino on the Lawn with James Moon

Let’s get outside and get inky! Lino on the Lawn is a 3-hour lino-cut workshop which will teach the basics of relief printing in an outdoor studio setting in the shade of the trees of the Riverview Community Gardens, located at 300 Churchill Drive. All materials and tools will be provided to create an edition of small prints using oil-based, water wash-up inks.

James Moon is a multidisciplinary artist and art educator rooted on Treaty 1 Territory. Moon utilises installation, printmaking, textile and craft as a means for connection and to take up space. The processes and histories of these mediums are influential in fostering their own ‘kitchen table’ of connection, community and knowledge sharing.

Our courses and workshops support new and experienced artists in improving technical skills in the art of printmaking and are delivered by professional artist-instructors. Courses and workshops are available to take year-round at our fully equipped 4,000 sq. ft. facility, and are offered in a variety of traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques. These include; screen printing (introductory and advanced), aluminum and copper etching, relief printing, digital darkroom, letterpress, lithography and more. In addition, we host specialty workshops in advanced techniques taught by local and visiting professional artists. While some exceptions may apply, our courses and workshops are intended for adults and are kept small to ensure a high quality of instruction.

Course and workshop information is available here or in brochures that are hand screen printed 3 times annually in spring, fall and winter by staff and volunteers. These are disseminated by mail to members and in person in Winnipeg at other artist run centres, local shops and organizations. In addition to information on available courses and workshops, each brochure features news and information about our upcoming exhibitions, artist talks, studio editions, local and national events.
