Introductory Screen Printing
w/Geoff Grauer

For those who have never printed before, or need a refresher on the basics, this course covers skills and techniques used in this versatile process. Students will have the opportunity to work on projects using analog and digital image preparation to create single and multicolour images, and will be introduced to special techniques including blended gradients.
Geoff began his printmaking journey in 2016 at the University of Saskatchewan where he focused on screen printing and photo-lithography. Since moving to Winnipeg he has been working at Martha Street printing guitar pedals for his music gear company and teaching the screen printing sections of the MSS Youth Outreach Program.
Sampler Pack of Printmaking Techniques Course
w/Ann Rallison

A little bit of this and a little bit of that – this is the perfect course for people who want to try printmaking and don’t know where to start! Drypoint, block printing, collagraph and some monoprint techniques will be explored in this fun, hands-on course. Great for first time printers or those who want a refresher! Please note: Screen printing is not taught in this course.
Ann was an art teacher for nearly 40 years in the school system. Since retiring she has continued to explore many art forms in her own practice, favouring experimentation with many types of printmaking. She has been an active member of Martha Street Studio for a number of years and is currently chair of the board.
Stone Lithography Course

Does scratching lines in a metal plate feel inadequate? Lino cutting seem flimsy? Screen printing just leave you feeling transparent? Try stone lithography! Stone lithography is one of the most interesting and expressive print techniques. In this class you’ll learn to grain and prep the stone, draw on the stone, process the stone, prep paper, and print!
Jonathan S. Green is of Mi’kmaq and Inuit, Settler heritage from Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador. Green earned an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Alberta. His creative research investigates ideas around landscape and wilderness, bushcraft and survival, camping and shelter in the face of the climate crisis.
Screen Printing Basics Workshop

This two–day workshop will focus on the basics of screen printing and include an orientation to the specific equipment and spaces used at Martha Street Studio. Learn how to create stencils, prepare a screen, mix ink, and create a two to three layer screen print. Great for the beginner or to refresh your skills.
Ali James is a Winnipeg-based artist who uses screen printing and animation to produce vivid, layered and tactile works that explore human memory and emotion. Ali holds a BFA Honours degree from the University of Manitoba.
Stamp Making Workshop

This 2-hour workshop equips you with carving techniques to turn a rubber block into your own personalized hand carved stamp to bring home. We’ll go over how to design your stamp, then follow along as you carve and create unique designs that add a special touch to cards, gifts, and anything else you can imagine!
Jeremy Wat is an illustrator and printmaker who loves learning, trying, and sharing art techniques and mediums. As an art educator of block printing classes and workshops, he loves teaching and encouraging students to create art.
Letterpress Cards and Carving Workshop

In this two-day workshop, students will learn the basics of creating folding greeting cards on our letterpress equipment using movable type, printers’ cuts, and pairing this with personal lino-cut graphics. Students can anticipate creating two card designs of up to two colours, with multiple prints of each.
Sean McLachlan is a Winnipeg based artist whose work blends traditional letterpress printing with digital technologies such as 3d printing and laser cut woodblocks. He is known under two other names, Printmonger Press for his personal letterpress studio, and Letter Peddler Press, the bicycle-mounted letterpress studio, where you can find him printing postcards with the public.

Our courses and workshops support new and experienced artists in improving technical skills in the art of printmaking and are delivered by professional artist-instructors. Courses and workshops are available to take year-round at our fully equipped 4,000 sq. ft. facility, and are offered in a variety of traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques. These include; screen printing (introductory and advanced), aluminum and copper etching, relief printing, digital darkroom, letterpress, lithography and more. In addition, we host specialty workshops in advanced techniques taught by local and visiting professional artists. While some exceptions may apply, our courses and workshops are intended for adults and are kept small to ensure a high quality of instruction.
Course and workshop information is available here or in brochures that are hand screen printed 3 times annually in spring, fall and winter by staff and volunteers. These are disseminated by mail to members and in person in Winnipeg at other artist run centres, local shops and organizations. In addition to information on available courses and workshops, each brochure features news and information about our upcoming exhibitions, artist talks, studio editions, local and national events.
